I think the key point is that you can't change the future by going into the past.

Another way you to say it is nothing you do doesn't affect the future. You spawn multiverses all the time without thinking about it, but:

I still don't get this multiverse-spawning thing, because if old-Chuck knew about the zombies, then the next new-Chuck would have gone to yet another new timeline and wouldn't have met old-Chuck.

Also, I have no idea what "you can't talk to verbs" is supposed to mean.

So if Mcninja goes back in time to a new timeline, and exits the portal the moment his shuttle exploded and he entered the time stream, won't the Doc in that new timeline's shuttle appear in a future where Mcninja killed the scout and saved the Earth?
