Cumberland is not the "linchpin for all the changes in the future Earth(s)". It is, however, home to Chuck Goodrich. The future's people know that a Chuck Goodrich who looks a lot like their Chuck Goodrich lived here in their past (McNinja's present). Future 'Chuck Goodrich' s go to Cumberland in seek of advice from the "past" Chuck Goodrich who obviously managed to travel through time. It explains as well why in every possible future (at least those in which the guy exists and is still alive : There might be other time travels we aren't aware of) it is Chuck Goodrich that is chosen to make the voyage.
